A Presidential award was given to an Indian-American woman by the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for her contribution towards combating human trafficking in Houston.

Special Advisor on Human Trafficking to Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, Minal Patel Davis, received the ‘Presidential Medal for Combating Human Trafficking’ at the White House last week.

President Donald Trump also attended the ceremony.

After winning the award, said Davis, “It was unbelievable.” The award is the country’s highest honour in the field.

Davis Said, “My parents came here from India. I was the first one in my family born in the United States, so to end up in the Mayor’s office a few years ago, and then to now end up in the White House, it was unbelievable.”

Currently, she is executing Mayor Turner’s Anti-Human Trafficking Strategic Plan.

This plan is the first inclusive municipal reaction to human trafficking by a US city.

At the UN World Humanitarian Summit, Davis was a past speaker.

Recently at the request of State Department, she travelled to Canada and India to discuss municipal leadership in trafficking with the government spokesperson.
