Taking a huge decision to mark the contribution of eminent personalities from the field of art and culture and noted historians, the Public Works Department (PWD) has amended its policy on naming of roads and buildings. While confirming the development, the PWD Minister Mr. Vijay Inder Singla, on Friday, said that prior to this amendment, roads or buildings were named only after religious personalities, civil or military gallantry award recipients, war martyrs, freedom fighters or Olympics or World level Championship winners.

“Our government has decided to include noted historians and renowned personalities of our Punjabi culture and the very first road as per this amendment has been named after renowned Punjabi historian Giani Ditt Singh ji,” the cabinet minister said.

He added that Kharar-Bassi Pathana Road (ODR-12) has been named after Giani Ditt Singh in honor of his contribution towards society after the approval of CM Captain Amarinder Singh. He said that special repair of this 12.45 km long road was also underway with the estimated cost of Rs. 4.68 crore which would be completed by March 31, 2021.

Mr. Singla said that Giani Ditt Singh was known as scholar, poet, editor, besides distinguished historian. He was an eminent Singh Sabha reformer, who wrote over 70 books on Sikhism, the most famous of which is Khalsa Akhbar.

Mr. Singla informed that the matter came to his knowledge after the formal recommendation of Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Bassi Pathana Mr. Gurpreet Singh G.P. After this, he immediately directed the authorities of the department to consider the matter with utmost priority and the road has been named after Giani Ditt Singh.
