Los Angeles: Now scientists have built up the smallest optical gyroscope-device in the world which helps drones, vehicles, handheld and wearable electronic devices recognize their orientation in three-dimensional space.

According to the journal Nature Photonics, the new gyroscope is 500 times smaller than the current state-of-the-art device.

The smallest high-performance optical gyroscopes today are larger than a golf ball, said researchers.

As per researches from California Institute of Technology, USA, gyroscopes initially were sets of nested wheels, each spinning on different axis.

On the other hand, MicroElectroMechanical Sensor (MEMS) is used in today’s mobile phones.

MEMS measures changes in the forces acting on two identical masses that are oscillating and moving in opposite directions.
