the moon

Boston – A piece of the moon weighing 5.5 kilograms (12-pound) which fell to the Earth has been sold for over $600,000 at an auction.

On Friday, the Boston-based RR Auction announced the winning bid of $612,500 for the lunar meteorite.

The meteorite is comprised of six fragments that shape together resembling a puzzle, and is also known as “The Moon Puzzle”.

The piece of the moon is now displayed at the Tam Chuc Pagoda complex in Ha Nam Province, Vietnam.

RR Auction predicted that it would get $500,000 at the auction.

The lunar meteorite was found in an isolated area of Mauritania in northern Africa last year.

RR said, “The meteorite is the largest known complete lunar puzzle ever found and one of the most significant examples from the moon to be offered to sale.”

The meteorite has ‘partial fusion crust’ which causes the tremendous heat that sears (burns) the rock as it falls to Earth.
