Sunil Arora has been appointed the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) by President Ram Nath Kovind, said sources on Monday.

Arora will take over from Om Prakash Rawat on December 2.

He will have about two-and-a-half-year tenure as CEC along with the 2019 General Election which will be conducted under his stewardship.

The former bureaucrat, Mr. Arora was appointed to the election body as Election Commissioner in September last year.

62-year old Mr. Arora had been the Information and Broadcasting Secretary and the Secretary in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.

He also served as the chairman and managing director of Indian Airlines.

A 1980-batch IS Officer of Rajasthan cadre, Mr. Arora has worked in the ministries and departments such as finance, textiles, and planning commission.

Also, Arora was appointed as a director general & CEO of the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs.
