The Punjab Higher Education and Languages Minister Mr. Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa has written a letter to the Vice Chancellor of Panjab University, Chandigarh Dr. Raj Kumar to conduct Senate elections without any further delay. ‘By not conducting elections the university administration is denying the right to vote to the constituents of the Senate of the University, which is not only against the established democratic principles, but it is also against the laws, regulations, and statutes as they stand today,’ said Bajwa.

Mr. Tript Bajwa said that the Punjab Government has been apprised of the widespread resentment amongst the professionals, teachers, principals, etc. who have been actively associated with the elections to the Senate of the University. He said that this could be avoided by conducting senate elections.
The Higher Education Minister in his letter to the Vice Chancellor of Panjab University has requested him to conduct the senate elections and ensure appropriate necessary arrangements for these elections. The Higher Education Minister has assured the Vice Chancellor that the Punjab Government would provide all required assistance to hold these elections. He further said that the Punjab Government would not like the present situation of “no Senate” for the Panjab University to continue.

Mr. Bajwa said that the term of the Senate of the Panjab University has ended on August 31, 2020 and as per the rules and regulations of the University regular conduct of elections to the Senate after every four years is mandatory. During the last over six decades, these elections were held regularly after every four years in August – September. It is not known why the elections to the Senate have not yet been held this year despite that the term of the Senate has expired. Furthermore, if the Senate is not constituted, the Syndicate of the University would also not be constituted as its term ends on 31st December, 2020.
The Higher Education Minister said that such excuses should not be made that the senate elections could not be held because of the pandemic Covid-19, as elections to the Parliament, State Legislative Assemblies, and various other elected bodies of Local Self Government have been conducted across the nation during the past few months. He said that taking all precautions required to prevent the Covid-19 the University Administration and the Administration of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, should conduct these elections without any further delay.
