Chandigarh: On the occasion of the first anniversary of renowned hockey player Padmashree Balbir Singh Sr., a formal tribute ceremony was organized at the Mohali Hockey Stadium today and this international stadium was dedicated to him.
Punjab Sports, Youth Services and NRI Affairs Minister Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi approved the name of Mohali International Hockey Stadium after Padam Shri Balbir Singh Sr. and dedicated the hockey stadium to Padam Shri Balbir Singh Sr. The stadium will now be known as “Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium”.

Rana Sodhi announced that an international hockey tournament will be held at the stadium in memory of the great international player when Kovid’s situation improves. Kabir Singh, the grandson of Balbir Singh Sr., also presented the Golden Goal, a book written by Principal Saravan Singh, to the Sports Minister. The Sports Minister said that the sports department will start a scholarship in the name of this great player for the talented sportspersons of the state. He further said that a statue will also be installed at the entrance of the stadium in memory of Shri Balbir Singh Sr.
The Sports Minister also planted saplings in memory of the great sportsman. It may be recalled that Balbir Singh Sr. played a key role in the Indian hockey team to become a three-time Olympic champion and to date no one has broken his Olympic finals record. He scored five goals in the final of the 1952 Olympic Games in which India defeated the Netherlands 6–1. Balbir Singh Sr. was the manager of the 1975 World Cup-winning Indian hockey team.

He served as Director, Sports Department, Punjab and encouraged the youth towards sports. This great player was awarded the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award in the year 2019 by the Punjab Government. Four Olympians Rajinder Singh Sr., Rajinder Singh Jr., Ajit Singh and Prabhjot Singh and Secretary, Sports Raj Kamal Chaudhary, Director DPS Kharbanda and Joint Director Kartar Singh were also present on the occasion.
