TOKYO: The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said an explosion was heard Wednesday at Mount Aso in the Kyushu region of southwestern Japan. Local officials are working to determine if there is still a climber on the mountain. According to the JMA, the blast occurred at 11.43am local time at No. 1 Nakadek Crater. At the same time, smoke billowed from the mountain in Kumamoto Prefecture.

The JMA said the volcanic ash had spread more than 1 km from the crater and reached analtitude of about 3,500 meters.
