TORONTO: As numerous Indian students are coming to Canada to study, the Indian govt. is organizing welcome ceremonies to help newcomers settle down.
On Wednesday evening, a large number of students gathered for the inaugural event held at the St George campus of University of Toronto (UofT).
The students from the Mississauga and Scarborough campuses were also included.
While explaining the main objective behind this drive, India’s consul general in Toronto, Dinesh Bhatia, said, “It is very important to connect with them and to make them aware that we exist for them.”
“Whenever there is an issue, they often don’t know where to go and these students, and through them, many other students, will get to know they can reach out to us in case of any difficulty,” Bhatia said.
Another similar event is planned at Seneca College, also in Greater Toronto Area (GTA) next week.
More than 125,000 international students from India are studying at Canada’s institutes for higher education.
Bhatia said that this drive is part of external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj’s ‘emphasis’ on the welfare of Indian students studying abroad.
