MADRID/PARIS, July 22, 2026 — Firefighters across southern Europe are battling major wildfires as extreme heat, drought and strong winds create dangerous conditions from Spain and France to Italy and Greece.
In Spain’s central Guadalajara province, the country’s largest wildfire of the year remained out of control for a sixth consecutive day. Authorities evacuated more than 1,200 people as temperatures rose above 40°C, pushing the fire risk to extreme levels.
The emergency came less than two weeks after a separate wildfire near Bédar in southern Almería province killed 13 people.
