Ontario premier highlights food drives, charitable outreach and youth programmes
TORONTO, July 29 2026: Ontario Premier Doug Ford joined members of the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Toronto for a celebration recognizing two decades of service to the Hindu and wider Etobicoke community.
Ford said the organization had established a record of charitable outreach while keeping its doors open to neighbours from different cultural and religious backgrounds.
The premier specifically acknowledged the mandir’s food drives, assistance for people experiencing hardship and programmes designed to connect young people with skills and opportunities.
The event was also attended by provincial representatives and members of the Indo-Canadian community. Its focus extended beyond the mandir’s religious role to its contribution as a centre for volunteering, cultural education and community support.
The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir complex is located on Claireville Drive in Toronto. It is open to people of all faiths and includes a traditional Hindu place of worship, a cultural centre and a heritage museum.
Built with carved stone and traditional architectural techniques, the complex has become a recognizable religious and cultural landmark in the Greater Toronto Area. Its programmes include religious assemblies, cultural activities, youth engagement and charitable initiatives.
Ford’s participation demonstrates the increasingly visible role played by faith-based diaspora institutions in Canadian civic life. Such organizations often help newcomers maintain cultural connections while also providing volunteer opportunities and assistance to the broader public.
