Trump Warns of Strong Response After Iranian Attack as White House Reviews Military and Diplomatic Options
WASHINGTON, July 30, 2026 — U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened a forceful response against Iran following an attack targeting American military personnel in Jordan, adding fresh uncertainty to already fragile efforts to contain the conflict.
Trump said he had been briefed on the attack as well as a separate fire aboard a U.S.-owned gas-storage vessel at Egypt’s Damietta port. A British maritime-security company assessed that the ship had been struck by a drone, while Egypt’s Petroleum Ministry confirmed the fire but did not identify its cause. Responsibility for the incident had not been established at the time of publication.
The warning came one day after Trump met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. According to a senior Israeli official, the two leaders examined three broad approaches to Iran: pursuing a negotiated settlement, maintaining economic and maritime pressure, or conducting a major military strike.
The official, who spoke anonymously, said Netanyahu did not urge Trump to launch an immediate attack. The meeting also covered intelligence cooperation and concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme. Tehran continues to insist that it is not seeking a nuclear weapon.
Iran has confirmed launching attacks against American positions in Jordan and vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Washington and Riyadh have separately carried out strikes against Iran-backed armed groups in Iraq.
No decision on a new large-scale operation against Iran had been announced.
