New Delhi, August 3, 2026: More than 100 Indian nationals died by suicide in the United States and Canada between 2023 and 2025, according to figures attributed to India’s Ministry of External Affairs and presented in Parliament.

The reported North American cases represented nearly 5% of approximately 1,850 suicides involving Indian citizens worldwide during the three-year period. The figures cover Indian nationals and should not automatically be interpreted as representing every person of Indian origin living in the two countries.

The data has renewed attention on the mental well-being of international students, temporary workers and other Indians living abroad. Financial pressure, social isolation, job uncertainty and immigration-related anxiety are among the challenges frequently identified by counsellors, although the government statistics do not determine what caused any individual death.

India’s diplomatic missions provide emergency and consular assistance through helplines and grievance portals. Nevertheless, the figures underline the potential value of culturally and linguistically accessible mental-health services, stronger campus support and early intervention within diaspora communities.

Anyone experiencing suicidal thoughts should contact local emergency services or an authorized crisis-support service immediately.
