BOSTON, August 5, 2026: Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu have issued separate proclamations recognizing August 15, 2026, as India Day.
The declarations commemorate the 79th anniversary of India’s independence and acknowledge the contributions of Indian Americans to medicine, science, technology, education, business, public service and community development.
Massachusetts’ proclamation, dated August 1, encourages residents to recognize the occasion and participate in related observances. Boston’s proclamation also welcomes the establishment of India’s new consulate in the city, describing it as an opportunity to expand diplomatic, commercial, educational and cultural connections with New England.
The proclamations carry symbolic and civic significance for the Indian diaspora. They do not establish a statutory holiday, require the closure of government offices or create a new legal entitlement.
