MOSCOW/KYIV — A Ukrainian drone attack on Nizhnekamsk in Russia’s Tatarstan region killed at least 13 people, including a child and several Central Asian nationals, according to Russian authorities.
Reports differed over the number of people injured. Reuters cited an official count of 39, while a later Associated Press report placed the figure at 78. Seven citizens of Uzbekistan and one Tajik national were reported among those killed.
Ukraine’s military said it targeted Tatneft’s TANECO oil refinery, located approximately 1,200 kilometres from the Ukrainian border. Russian officials said industrial facilities and residential property were damaged, while Ukraine did not address Moscow’s allegations that civilians had been deliberately targeted.
Russian and Ukrainian descriptions of the complete damage could not be independently verified.
Why it matters: The attack demonstrates Ukraine’s ability to reach strategic energy facilities deep inside Russian territory. It could disrupt refining operations, but the civilian deaths also underline the growing human cost of long-range drone warfare away from the front line.
