A group of 30 US senators has asked the State Department to address reported delays and limited appointment availability for student and exchange-visitor visas ahead of the fall academic term.
Senator Alex Padilla led the initiative with 29 Senate colleagues. In a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the lawmakers expressed concern that applicants for F, M and J visas may be unable to reach the United States before their academic programmes begin.
The senators requested that the department prioritize the interviewing and processing of student visas, maintain adequate staffing at consular offices and provide clearer information about appointment availability and processing times. They also sought details about additional vetting measures, including reviews of applicants’ online presence.
The letter is significant for Indian students because India is one of the largest sources of international enrolment at American educational institutions. Applicants unable to secure appointments or complete administrative processing in time could face deferred admission, additional expenses or disruption to their academic plans.
The senators’ intervention is a request for administrative action and information. It does not change visa eligibility, guarantee an interview appointment or compel the State Department to approve or expedite an individual application.
