The Consulate General of India in Auckland has updated its instructions for residents of New Zealand seeking an NRI Certificate.
An NRI Certificate is used to confirm an applicant’s non-resident status for specified purposes in India. Applications must first be completed through the Indian government’s online consular-services portal. Following online scrutiny, applicants must schedule an appointment and appear at the Auckland consulate with their original documents.
Indian passport holders must possess a valid passport and generally demonstrate that they remained outside India for more than 182 days during the relevant April-to-March financial year. Supporting documents include passport and immigration records, a valid New Zealand visa, an entry-and-exit record and proof of a New Zealand address.
Foreign or New Zealand passport holders who possess an OCI card can apply through a separate category. For such applicants, the Auckland consulate issues the certificate only when it is required to support a family member’s admission to an Indian university under the NRI quota. Proof from the relevant university or educational institution must be submitted.
The fee for both application categories is NZ$45.
The updated notice explains the Auckland consulate’s documentation and appointment procedure. It should not be interpreted as a new global definition of NRI status or as a change applicable automatically to Indian missions in every country.
