Delaware Governor Matt Meyer has proclaimed August 15, 2026, as India Day, recognizing India’s independence and the contributions of people of Indian heritage to the American state.
The proclamation acknowledges the role of Indian-origin Delaware residents in employment, entrepreneurship, leadership, public service and community development. It also highlights India’s linguistic, cultural and religious diversity and the longstanding connections between communities in Delaware and India.
Delaware joins New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts, which have issued similar proclamations recognizing India’s Independence Day and the contribution of their Indian-American populations.
India will observe its 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, marking 79 completed years since independence in 1947. The two descriptions are therefore not contradictory: the first Independence Day was observed in 1947, while 2026 marks its 79th anniversary.
