The number of Indian students enrolled at German universities reached a record 69,816 during the 2025–26 winter semester, according to figures published by the German Academic Exchange Service, or DAAD.
The total represents a 17.5 per cent annual increase, with Germany adding nearly 10,400 students from India in one year. Indians are now the largest international-student community studying in the country.
Indian students account for approximately 13.5 per cent of Germany’s international university population and about 2.4 per cent of all students enrolled in German higher education institutions.
Germany recorded a total university population of 2,864,160, including 516,820 international students, according to the figures cited by DAAD India.
The increase indicates that Germany is becoming a major destination for Indian students interested in engineering, technology, research and other higher-education programmes. Comparatively affordable education at many public institutions, expanding English-language programmes and post-study career opportunities have contributed to its appeal.
Students considering Germany should nevertheless examine language requirements, living expenses, housing availability, visa conditions and the recognition of individual degree programmes before enrolling.
