Record adds to concerns over rising temperatures and changing climate patterns
August 2026 was the hottest August recorded in India since nationwide temperature records began in 1901, according to the India Meteorological Department. Average temperatures across the country remained significantly above normal during the month. The record comes alongside a weaker monsoon, with India also reporting a rainfall deficit between June and August. Higher temperatures combined with insufficient rainfall can increase pressure on agriculture, electricity demand, reservoirs and groundwater resources. Scientists have repeatedly warned that global warming is increasing the likelihood and intensity of extreme heat events, although individual monthly records can also be influenced by shorter-term weather patterns.
