Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has introduced a temporary measure allowing eligible work-permit holders already in Canada to undertake short-term education or occupational training without applying for a separate study permit.
Eligible workers may study for up to six months or until their current work permit expires, whichever happens first. IRCC is notifying people who qualify for the exemption.
The measure is intended to help workers—including tradespeople, nurses and laboratory technicians—complete short licensing, educational or skills-upgrading programs while continuing to work.
Full-time studies still require a study permit. The exemption does not create a new immigration pathway or allow foreign nationals to enter Canada for work. It is scheduled to remain available until December 31, 2027.
