A man was taken to a specialized burn unit with life-threatening injuries following a fire inside a west Toronto apartment building.

Firefighters responded to a high-rise near Lansdowne Avenue and Dupont Street after heavy smoke was reported from an eighth-floor unit. According to the initial report, the injured man was the only person inside that apartment.

The victim suffered burns and smoke inhalation. Fire crews extinguished the blaze quickly, contained it to the affected unit and checked other residents for possible injuries. No additional patients were reported, and neighbouring apartments were not damaged by the fire.

Investigators are working to establish how the fire started. No official cause had been announced at the time of publication
