UNITED NATIONS — OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urged governments to establish common safeguards for increasingly capable artificial-intelligence systems. They highlighted potential loss of human control, biological-weapons assistance and excessive concentration of AI power.
The United States opposed creating a new global governance structure that could restrict development, while Britain said AI safety would be placed at the centre of its forthcoming G20 presidency.
Why it matters: International standards could determine how governments manage autonomous weapons, cybersecurity, biological threats and accountability for decisions made by AI.
