Status: Casualties reported by Ukrainian authorities; individual interception and target claims remain contested
KYIV — Russian missiles and drones killed seven Ukrainian civilians, including a child, and injured 24, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The combined attack primarily targeted energy infrastructure around Kyiv and caused power outages as colder weather approaches.
Ukraine says Russia launched 3,177 jet-powered drones during September, compared with 2,850 in August. Moscow said it struck power plants, a substation, an energy-storage installation and a data centre.
Why it matters: Sustained attacks on electricity infrastructure could deprive civilians of heating, power and water during winter while exhausting Ukraine’s limited air-defence missiles. AP News
