(Says State witnessed 27 murders, 24 farmer suicides and 61 cases of drug over dose deaths in two months)
(Also demands immediate withdrawal of ban on wheat exports and Rs 500 per quintal compensation to farmers who suffered low yields)
Jalalabad: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal today said the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was all out to ruin Punjab in only two months with the State witnessing a complete breakdown in law and order, terror attacks and rampant drug overdose deaths. Talking to newsmen here after visiting Kattiyanwali village in this constituency to mourn the demise of three young children who died in a bus accident, the SAD President also demanded that the AAP government give an ex-gratia compensation of at least Rs five lakh to all the victim families. He also addressed public meetings on the occasion.

Mr Sukhbir Badal said he was shocked at the manner in which Punjab was being misgoverned. “Punjab has witnessed 27 murders. As many as 24 farmers have committed suicide even as 61 youth have lost their lives due to drug overdoses. Instead of providing succor to the common man and ensuring rule of law, release of crop damage compensation and provision of cooperative loans to farmers as well as acting against the drug mafia, chief minister Bhagwant Mann is holding phony photo-ops in Chandigarh.

Even today two persons were injured in a firing incident during the course of a Kabaddi match in Kapurthala. If this is the ‘badlav’ AAP had promised then Punjabis are in for one of the worst phases in the history of the State”. Asserting that AAP misled Punjabis with lies to secure their votes and had no intention of doing away with the drug menace, Mr Badal said a delegation of villagers also met him and disclosed how the police forced the panchayat to give an undertaking that a youth who had died due to drug overdose, had suffered a seizure.

“This despite the fact that a syringe was found on the person of the deceased at the time of his death”. Mr Badal also demanded that the central government lift the ban imposed on the export of wheat to stop an artificially created fall in the demand for farm produce. Asserting that farmers were being victimized and being denied benefit of a price increase due to exports, he said apparently the same logic was not applied to steel and cement exports.

“We have witnessed a steep increase in steel and cement prices after their exports were allowed by the centre which has benefitted corporates but wheat is not being allowed to be exported because farmers do not have any voice in the government”. The SAD President said allowing wheat exports would have seen farmers recouping the losses they suffered on account of low yields due to unseasonal rains followed by a sharp increase in temperatures.

He said the AAP government had failed to get the phenomenon declared as a natural calamity. He said the Punjab government would take up the cause of farmers forcefully with the centre and demand a compensation of Rs 500 per quintal for them. “Not doing so will have an adverse impact on the agricultural economy of the State and would affect all stake holders”, he added.
