London, July 22, 2026: Officiating Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj has urged Sikhs living overseas to preserve their religious identity while remaining law-abiding and constructive members of their adopted countries.
Gargaj delivered the message during the 27th Bala Pritam Gurmat Samagam at Gurdwara Guru Nanak Garib Niwaz in Hayes, London. The gathering commemorated the Parkash Gurpurab of Guru Har Krishan Sahib.
The programme was jointly organized by the Afghan Sikh Sangat, Nihkami Sewa Trust UK, Guru Hargobind Sahib Trust UK and the host gurdwara.
Addressing the congregation, Gargaj described Guru Nanak’s teachings as inclusive and opposed to discrimination and extremism. He said the principles of Sikhism embrace humanity as a whole and should guide the community’s conduct wherever Sikhs live.
Sikh articles of faith and self-defence
Referring to concerns surrounding Sikh religious symbols in Britain, Gargaj said the shastars associated with Sikh tradition represent resistance to injustice and the protection of vulnerable people. He emphasized that Sikh teachings do not permit their use for aggression or oppression.
The Jathedar encouraged Sikh families to retain their connection with gurdwaras, Sikh history and the Rehat Maryada. He also asked parents to communicate closely with their children and ensure that younger generations understand the meaning of Sikh identity.
He urged diaspora Sikhs to obey local laws, contribute positively to society and avoid allowing isolated incidents to define the wider community.
Focus on identity and institutions
Gargaj appealed to families to preserve the names “Singh” and “Kaur” and move beyond divisions associated with caste-based identities.
During a separate engagement at Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Southall, he emphasized the importance of Sikh institutions and called for stronger engagement between the diaspora, Akal Takht and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee.
He also advised overseas donors to verify how charitable contributions are used so that assistance reaches genuinely deserving families and institutions in Punjab.
