NEW DELHI, July 21, 2026 — At least 25 people have died after torrential monsoon rainfall triggered flash floods and landslides across northern and northeastern India, according to officials. Rescue teams continued searching affected areas on Monday as forecasters warned that further heavy rain was likely.
At least 15 deaths were reported in rain-related incidents across Poonch, Rajouri and Doda districts in Indian-administered Kashmir. Several people remained missing at the time of reporting.
In Nagaland, landslides caused by persistent rainfall killed nine people. Officials said rescue teams had recovered four bodies while operations continued. A further death was recorded in neighbouring Assam, where flooding affected more than 57,000 residents across seven districts.
The severe weather damaged homes, blocked roads and disrupted transportation in several areas. Rain-related hazards have also affected adjoining Nepal, where authorities reported 27 deaths, one missing person and 69 injuries since the monsoon season began in mid-June.
India’s meteorological authorities said active monsoon conditions were expected to continue across the country’s northwest, east and northeast for another six to seven days. Communities in mountainous areas remain particularly vulnerable because saturated slopes can produce sudden landslides with little warning.
