India/United States – Actor Imran Khan, an American citizen who holds an Overseas Citizen of India card, has reportedly been ordered by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office to leave India by October 28.
The notice followed Khan’s participation in an October 10 demonstration in Mumbai. Authorities reportedly allege that his involvement breached immigration requirements governing foreign nationals. His lawyers are expected to challenge the decision.
The action applies specifically to Khan. It does not cancel the OCI programme or impose a new blanket restriction on all cardholders. OCI status provides long-term travel and residency privileges, but it is not Indian citizenship and does not include the complete political rights available to citizens. Indian law does not, however, expressly state that every foreign national is prohibited from attending a political demonstration.
