Chandigarh, April 2 :

The Punjab Government has commenced the COVID-19 vaccination drive for all 45 years above population. A total of 48,880 beneficiaries today got the first jab of vaccine and it is highest number in a single day across the State.

 Giving details in press statement, the Health Minister Mr. Balbir Singh Sidhu said that 1,46,201 HCWs and 2,13,305 FLWs have been vaccinated with first dose and a total of 4,51,029 eligible persons above 45 years have received their first dose while a total of 1,08,994 persons got second dose so far. He said that to expedite the vaccination of priority groups, instructions have been issued to conduct vaccination on all seven days a week including gazette holidays in month of April.

Expressing concern over the high Case Fatility Rate (CFR) of state, Health Minister Mr. Balbir Singh Sidhu said that more than 80% of COVID deaths happen in people above 45 years of age. To protect this section of society and reduce COVID related mortality, the population above 45 years of age has been included in the eligible beneficiaries for vaccination.

He appealed to the eligible beneficiaries to get COVID-19 vaccination at earliest and he also urged all the NGOs and Welfare clubs to come together with a aim to cover maximum number of people under this drive. He said that at present, vaccination is the single way out to save the priceless lives of our people and as per study of World Health Organization until or unless 70% population of World is never got the COVID-19 vaccination till than there is constantly threat of spread of corona virus.

He assured that Covishield and Covaxin both are safe and effective vaccines. Vaccination is an important tool to check the spread of pandemic and reduce deaths.

It is a two dose schedule where the second dose of Covishield it to be taken 6-8 weeks after first dose while covaxin second dose is after 4 weeks, he added.

It is appealed that all eligible beneficiaries must get vaccinated at earliest.

He also informed that for vaccination, the beneficiary can pre-register themselves on CoWIN portal or get registered on site of vaccination. Any photo ID such as driving license, AB-Sarbat Sehat Bima Yojna card, voter card, passport, pan card, bank and post office pass book with photograph and mgrega job card etc. can be used for registration though Aadhar card is preferred for registration. For further information anyone can get information from tool free number 1075.
