The deaths of two Nigerian citizens in separate incidents have heightened concerns about the safety of foreign nationals in South Africa.
Nigeria’s Foreign Ministry said James Uchechukwu Nwankwo died after being questioned by police in Cape Town on September 5. Nigerian authorities have alleged that excessive interrogation methods contributed to his death. South African investigators have not yet publicly established the complete circumstances.
In a separate case, Bishop Taiwo Michael Fakunle was killed at his Johannesburg residence on September 4. No motive or suspect had been publicly confirmed at the time of reporting.
The Nigerian government has requested investigations and accountability. The cases come amid recurring anti-immigrant tensions in South Africa, although authorities have not established that both deaths were motivated by xenophobia.
