At least five people were killed and five injured after a Boeing 767 cargo aircraft overran a runway at Miami International Airport. Three of the injured were reported to be in critical condition.
The aircraft, operated by 21 Air for Amazon, had arrived from San Juan when it crossed a road bordering the airport, struck several vehicles and caught fire. More than 160 flights were cancelled and approximately 325 delayed following the accident.
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board is examining the landing point, reported winds, maintenance history and available runway-overrun protections. No official cause has been established.
Why it matters: The aircraft entered an area used by vehicles outside the airport, demonstrating how a runway accident can endanger passengers, workers and the surrounding community.
