Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan has been appointed vice-chair for parks on the US Conference of Mayors’ Tourism, Arts, Parks, Entertainment and Sports Committee.

The committee considers municipal policy issues involving parks, recreation, tourism, arts, culture, entertainment and sports. Its recommendations can help shape the policy positions adopted by the national organization representing mayors of US cities with populations of 30,000 or more.

Salwan said the appointment would allow Fremont to learn from successful projects in other cities, explore new partnerships and identify possible funding opportunities for local parks, trails and open spaces.

Salwan was sworn in as Fremont’s first elected Indian-American mayor in December 2024. Before becoming mayor, he held several civic positions, including planning commissioner, city councillor and vice-mayor.

The appointment gives an Indian-American elected representative a greater role in national discussions concerning urban recreation and public infrastructure.
