Oshawa: The disappointing decision of General Motors, who is going to shut down the Assembly Plant in Oshawa, Ontario, will cut 2800 workers.
On Monday, the President of Unifor, the union representing auto workers at the plant, also accused the company of breaking the agreement with his employees.
During a press conference at the Union Hall, Unifor’s President Jerry Dias said: “Our shared agreement was that they will not shut down any of our facilities. So, we will do anything to ensure that they remain firm on their promise.”
They said that even if we have to fight, we will not allow the plant to be closed.
According to Dias, in the 2016 agreement between Unifor and the Company, it was decided that GM would not shut down any manufacturing plants in Canada during the contract period. This agreement is valid till September 2020.
GM announced on Monday that they have no intention of continuing production in Oshawa by the end of 2019.
The company announced similarly for three factories in Michigan and a factory in Ohio.
Apart from this, the company wants to stop working on two facilities outside of North America, but the names of these facilities have not been disclosed by the company.
The company says that these changes are being done in accordance with the consumer’s demand.
General Motors Company CEO Mary Barra said that for the success of the company, we are compelled to make such changes keeping in mind the customer’s preferences.
The company wants to increase the number of electric and autonomous vehicles in the next two years.
This is expected that the company would save 6 billion dollars every year.
