Chandigarh: Harpal Singh Cheema, senior leader of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab and Leader of Opposition, alleged that the Congress government did not provide unemployment allowance of Rs. 2500 per month to the unemployed and no employment bureaus (employment offices) were opened. Cheema promised that with the formation of Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab, the unemployed youth of the state would be provided employment in government and non-government sector as well as financial help, training and resources would be provided for self-employment.

In a statement issued from the party headquarters here on Tuesday, Harpal Singh Cheema said that in the 2017 Assembly elections, the Congress party, under the leadership of Capt. Amarinder Singh, in their ‘Election Manifesto’ promised to give unemployment allowance of Rs. 2500 per month. But, after the formation of the government, the Congress party and Capt. Amarinder Singh broke their promise as the Congress government had not launched any scheme to provide unemployment allowance to millions of unemployed youth in the state.

He said that if the Congress government had given an unemployment allowance of Rs. 2500 per month as per its election promise, then every unemployed youth would get a financial benefit of Rs. 1.50 lakhs in five years. Cheema further said that the Congress party had promised to set up an ‘Employment Bureau’ to identify the unemployed youth in the state and to provide allowance, employment and training to them. He alleged that there have been two Chief Ministers of the Congress government (Capt. Amarinder Singh and Charanjit Singh Channi) but no one has opened employment bureaus in the state, no names of the unemployed have been registered and not a single penny has been paid to the unemployed.

On the top of that Congress government closed down the district level employment offices due to lack of staff. Harpal Singh Cheema claimed that the Aam Aadmi Party has become a beacon of hope for the unemployed youth of Punjab as the Aam Aadmi Party guarantees the youth employment. He said that the Aam Aadmi Party would not only fill up the vacancies in the government departments to provide employment to the unemployed but would also develop industry, trade and commerce so that employment can be generated in private sector too.
