OCI holders will generally no longer need a replacement booklet after receiving a new passport above age 20, but passport information must be updated online
NEW DELHI, July 25, 2026 — Indian diplomatic missions have begun circulating practical guidance about the government’s new electronic Overseas Citizen of India card, or e-OCI, which is intended to make OCI-related services more accessible to the global Indian diaspora.
The e-OCI system was formally launched by India’s Ministry of Home Affairs on June 30. It allows approved applicants to download a digitally generated OCI card instead of relying exclusively on a physical booklet.
Existing OCI cardholders can obtain the electronic version in most cases without filing an entirely new application or completing another physical-verification process. The service is available through the official OCI portal and the Indian Visa Su-Swagatam mobile application.
Importantly, existing physical OCI cards remain valid for immigration and other authorized services. Cardholders are therefore not required to surrender or immediately replace their current booklets simply because the electronic system has been introduced.
The government has also removed the general requirement to obtain a new OCI booklet when a cardholder receives a new passport after turning 20. However, the holder must upload or update the relevant passport information through the official online system whenever a new passport is issued.
The government says digital cards will reduce paperwork, accelerate processing and lower the risk associated with losing or damaging physical documents. Electronic records are also intended to enable real-time verification at Indian immigration checkpoints.
OCI status provides eligible foreign citizens of Indian origin with long-term entry and residency benefits. It is not equivalent to Indian citizenship and does not confer voting rights or the right to hold certain constitutional offices.
Applicants and existing cardholders should use only official government portals and remain cautious of private websites offering paid OCI-download or renewal services.
