old fort landslide

After being isolated by a landslide on Sunday, the northeastern B.C. town of Old Fort is under evacuation alert.

The slide broke the road that headed to the town, just south of Fort St. John.

It could take quite a few days before it is repaired.

About 50 homes and probably 100 to 200 people are affected, said the director of the Peace River Regional District Emergency Operations Centre, Trish Morgan.

Also, in the Old Fort subdivision, the area is affected by power outage.

Public Affairs Officer, Danielle Pope along with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure told that landslide experts were on site Monday afternoon.

“We want to assure the community that we are doing everything possible to open this road as soon as it’s safe to do so,” said Danielle in a statement.

No immediate threat to homes: Morgan

Presently, the regional district is analyzing whether materials could be boated into town.

Morgan said, “Those who want to stay [in old Fort] at this time, we’re allowing them to do so, but they have to be self-sufficient. Because of the road, there are just no ways to get supplies in and out.”

There is no “immediate threat” to homes, Morgan added further.
