NEW DELHI, July 21, 2026 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi appeared to take a veiled swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday while praising the young professionals behind a milestone in India’s private space programme.
Speaking to reporters before the opening of Parliament’s Monsoon Session, Modi highlighted the work of Skyroot Aerospace and said the average age of the startup’s team was 28.
“These young people have accomplished this work,” Modi said, before adding that he was not referring to a “56-year-old youth.”
The prime minister did not identify Gandhi by name. However, the comment was widely interpreted as a reference to the 56-year-old Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, who has frequently been presented as a prominent voice for younger Indians.
Space achievement provides backdrop
Modi made the remark while discussing Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 mission. The privately developed orbital-class rocket successfully reached orbit during its maiden test flight, according to reports, marking a significant step in the expansion of India’s commercial space industry.
The prime minister credited the achievement to the ambition and technical capability of India’s younger generation. He said their progress demonstrated how reforms and private-sector participation were creating new opportunities in advanced technology.
Appeal for constructive parliamentary debate
Modi also called upon lawmakers from all parties to participate fully in the Monsoon Session and ensure that parliamentary proceedings remained productive.
He argued that strong facts and reasoning could make an effective case without shouting or disruption. Parliament, he added, should provide an opportunity for different opinions to be heard.
The appeal came as opposition parties prepared to challenge the government on several contentious matters, including alleged examination irregularities and concerns affecting students and job seekers.
Gandhi subsequently accused the Modi government of failing young Indians, citing examination-paper leaks and police action against protesters. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also responded to Modi’s remark as the political exchange intensified on the session’s opening day.
The episode set an adversarial tone for a parliamentary session expected to feature sharp debate between the governing Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress-led opposition.
