The World Sikh Organization (WSO) of Canada expressed deep disappointment on the lack of remembrance of the 1984 Sikh Genocide by Ontario Premier Doug Ford as well as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, stated WSO in a press release.
None of the two, Prime Minister Trudeau and Premier Ford issued any commemoration of the 1984 Sikh Genocide.
The 1984 Sikh Genocide is a sore topic among a large segment of the Sikh community, which is marked by Sikhs during the first week of November across the world.
The violence which led to the killing of thousands of innocent Sikhs carried out under the direction of members of the then ruling Congress Party of India.
“As I said in Parliament this week, we must continue to call on the Indian government to pursue the truth, pursue justice for those who carry the scars of 1984, and pursue accountability for all people of India,” said Prime Minister Trudeau in 2014 as a leader of Liberal Party.
However, a lot has happened after taking office in 2015 as well as the trip to India that went off badly.
In April 2017, the 1984 Sikh Genocide was recognized by the passing of a motion in the Ontario Legislature.
At that time, Premier Ford’s Progressive Conservative Party also supported the motion.
But this year, none of the members of Doug Ford’s caucus including him marked the anniversary of the genocide.
