South Australian Council Election 2018: Sunny Singh has been elected as one of the new councillors of Port Augusta, who was subjected to a racial attack by a local truck driver lately.
Singh who is a transport manager in Port Augusta, a city of Australia, thanked the Indian community for their support and love.
In an interview, Mr Singh said, “I have been here for 10 years and as per the information I have gathered, I think I am the first Indian-origin candidate at least in the past 20 years to have been successfully elected as a councillor in Port Augusta.”
With the highest number of votes received by any of the 21 candidates contesting in the area, Sunny won the election with a total of 753 votes.
Sunny said that he was amazed at the result.
Among other candidates, two other Indian-origin candidates also won the seats in Australia’s council elections.
From Plympton, Surender Pal Singh Chahal became the area councillor while other candidate, Simratpal Singh Malhi won the local government poll from the town of Renmark in South Australia.
