Washington meeting focuses on Ukraine’s air defences, domestic weapons production and possible new diplomatic initiative
WASHINGTON, July 29, 2026 — U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy discussed a potential arrangement that could allow Ukraine to manufacture Patriot air-defence interceptors domestically.
The proposal was raised during a private meeting at the White House. No final agreement, production schedule or financial arrangement was announced following the talks.
Ukraine has repeatedly requested additional Patriot systems and interceptor missiles as Russia continues launching drones, ballistic missiles and guided bombs against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Kyiv says shortages of interceptors leave civilian communities and strategically important facilities vulnerable.
Zelenskiy also held discussions with representatives of Lockheed Martin, the principal contractor for the Patriot system. The talks addressed faster deliveries and the possibility of establishing some form of production or co-production capacity in Ukraine.
Patriot interceptors are technically complex and require specialized components, secure production facilities and approval from the United States. Any Ukrainian manufacturing programme would therefore require long-term cooperation rather than providing an immediate solution to current shortages.
Trump and Zelenskiy also discussed reopening diplomatic negotiations with Russia. Zelenskiy indicated that senior American representatives could visit Ukraine to advance mediation efforts, although no date or formal peace framework was announced.
Relations between Trump and Zelenskiy have improved following periods of disagreement over military assistance and the direction of peace negotiations. However, significant differences remain between Ukraine and Russia over occupied territory, security guarantees and the conditions for any ceasefire.
The meeting took place while American lawmakers were considering additional sanctions against Russia. Zelenskiy also met U.S. senators during his Washington visit to seek continued political and military support.
Why it matters: Producing Patriot interceptors in Ukraine could eventually strengthen the country’s ability to defend itself without relying entirely on limited foreign inventories. Renewed negotiations may create a diplomatic opening, but the conflict’s central territorial and security disputes remain unresolved.
