The Defense Department officials say Trump has ordered the completion of the withdrawal of the US troops in 30 days.
However, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and State Department officials have long fretted about leaving Syria before a peace agreement can be reached.
The US official said the decision to withdraw the army was taken on Tuesday.
However, the official did not give any deadline.
The US State Department was evacuating all its personnel in Syria within 24 hours said one U.S. official. They could leave even sooner, said the second official.
Currently, there are about 2,000 American soldiers in Syria, many of the special operations force working closely with an alliance of Kurdish and Arab militias known as the Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF.
