An immigration-enforcement graphic published on the US Department of Homeland Security’s official social-media account has prompted criticism from Sikh and Indian-American organizations.
The AI-generated poster, designed as a parody of the Transformers film franchise, showed a brown-skinned, bearded man wearing a head covering. Its message told “Mr Singh” to leave American roads while promoting the administration’s voluntary self-deportation campaign.
The Sikh Coalition objected to the use of “Singh,” noting that the surname is carried by millions of Sikhs and that Sikh and Punjabi drivers have long contributed to America’s transportation industry. The Hindu American Foundation and several public figures also accused DHS of unfairly associating an entire community with undocumented immigration and unsafe driving.
DHS linked its campaign to immigration enforcement in the commercial-transportation sector, where recent fatal crashes involving some Indian-origin drivers have received national attention. Critics maintain that misconduct by individuals should not be used to stereotype a broader ethnic or religious community.
