The court of Additional Sessions Judge VK Goel on Thursday acquitted gangster Jagdeep Singh alias Jaggu Bhagwanpuria and his accomplice, Mandeep Singh, in the murder case of another gangster, Sanjiv Nayyar alias Babba.

Babba was gunned down on the Amritsar-Attari bypass road in September 2014 when was returning home with his wife and son from a marriage function. He was out on parole at that time. On the statement of his son, Raghav, the Sadar police had registered a case under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC and provisions of the Arms Act against unidentified persons.

Jaggu’s name figured in the case when the Amritsar rural police arrested two of his accomplices — Malkeet Singh of Channake village and Ranjodh Singh of Udonangal village — in November 2014. They allegedly told the police that Jaggu and others had murdered Babba.

Babba and Ankur Likhari had been serving life imprisonment for the murder of gangster Raju Chikna. The latter was gunned down by car-borne assailants outside a local court on January 15, 2010. They had been sentenced by a court in February 2014. Babba had come out on 28-day parole when he was shot dead.

Amandeep Singh, counsel for Bhagwanpuria, said the public prosecutor failed to prove the charges, leading to the duo’s acquittal.

Babba’s wife Monica Babba, who is residing in New Delhi, said she would discuss the course of action with her family.
