The domestic stock market started the first session of the calendar year 2019 on a negative note.

The S&P BSE Sensex started at 36161.80 and the NSE Nifty50 at 10881.70.

At 9:27 am, the 30-share Sensex traded at 35,993.21, with a loss of 75.12 points or 0.21%, while the 50-scrip Nifty was 11.85 points or 0.11% lower at 10,850.70.

Losing between 0.6% and 1.1%, PowerGrid, Indiabulls Housing Finance, Eicher Motors, Asian Paints and Hindalco Industries were the top laggards on the Nifty pack.

Meanwhile, the equity benchmark indices finished the last session of the calendar year 2018 on a choppy note.

The BSE Sensex ended at 36,068, with loss of 8 points, while the broader Nifty settled 2 points higher from the previous close at 10,862.
