Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal said that mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery will come into effect from June 16 to ensure “better protection and satisfaction of customers”.

Implementation will happen in a phased manner starting with 256 districts of the country. The government said that jewellers with a turnover of up to ₹40 lakh will be exempt from mandatory hallmarking.
