VILNIUS: A ferry heading towards Lithuania from Germany lost power following an engine room incident on Tuesday, said Lithuania’s Defence Ministry.
After the Lithuanian-flagged ferry sent out a distress signal at 1045 GMT, the Lithuanian military sent a helicopter to the ferry and if needed, two more are on standby, a Lithuanian Air Force spokesman said.
The ferry, Regina Seaways, restored power to its main engine 4 hours after it issued a distress call due to a suspected fire in its engine room, the ministry said.
Danish ferry company DFDS’s spokesperson stated that not even a single person was reported injured.
The ferry was likely to dock in the Lithuanian port town of Klaipeda by 2100 GMT, added the company’s spokesperson.
Reports of a fire on board by the Lithuanian military were contradicted by the spokesperson, saying, “There was vibration and there was smoke, but no fire was noticed.”
