DAMASCUS, July 25, 2026 — United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres met Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus on Saturday, becoming the first serving UN chief to visit the Syrian capital since 2009.
The meeting represented an important diplomatic moment for Syria as its government seeks international assistance and renewed engagement following years of civil war.
Guterres said Syria could not rebuild on its own after a conflict that killed hundreds of thousands of people, displaced millions and caused widespread destruction to housing, hospitals, schools and essential infrastructure.
Speaking after the talks, the UN chief pledged support for Syria’s reconstruction and emphasized the need for assistance from the international community. The discussions focused on rebuilding the country, strengthening cooperation with the United Nations and restoring Syria’s diplomatic relationships.
Syria’s state news agency confirmed that President al-Sharaa received Guterres at the presidential palace. Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani also participated in the public discussions following the meeting.
Syria faces considerable obstacles to recovery. Large areas require reconstruction, millions of displaced people still need durable housing and employment, and international sanctions continue to complicate access to investment and financial services.
The return of Syrian refugees is also expected to depend on security, political stability, essential services and credible protections for those returning.
