UNITED SIKHS has invited Sikh Americans to report incidents involving discrimination, religious accommodation and civil-rights concerns. The appeal follows the organization’s meetings with authorities at the federal, state and local levels.
The organization is seeking first-hand information about workplace restrictions involving Sikh articles of faith, difficulties carrying the kirpan, prolonged questioning at airports or border crossings, secondary screening and possible inclusion on no-fly lists. It has also requested information about immigration-related discrimination, social-media account suspensions and employment problems, including concerns affecting commercial drivers.
According to the advisory, submissions will help the organization identify recurring problems and strengthen its legal and policy advocacy. Community members have been asked to provide accurate details and supporting documentation where available.
The appeal should not be interpreted as the announcement of a government investigation or a finding that discrimination occurred in every reported case. It is an information-gathering initiative led by a Sikh civil-rights organization.
