KYIV/MOSCOW/BUCHAREST — Russia and Ukraine carried out major reciprocal attacks overnight, causing deaths, injuries and damage to industrial and commercial facilities.
A Russian attack on Ukraine’s largest steel plant in Kryvyi Rih killed at least two people and injured 14, Ukrainian officials said. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih reported damage to its power-generation and blast-furnace facilities, forcing the partial suspension of production. Missile strikes also caused fires and injuries in Kyiv and its surrounding region.
Russian authorities said a large Ukrainian drone attack targeted the Moscow region, killing an 83-year-old man and injuring several other people. A warehouse used by online retailer Wildberries was set on fire. Moscow claimed that 822 Ukrainian drones were intercepted across Russia, but that figure has not been independently verified.
Romania’s Defence Ministry said a Spanish F-18 serving under NATO’s air-policing mission shot down a drone that entered Romanian airspace from the direction of Moldova. NATO said the aircraft appeared to be Russian, although an investigation is continuing.
Why it matters: The interception over NATO-member Romania demonstrates the growing risk that the war could unintentionally spread beyond Ukraine’s borders.
