New Democratic Party candidate Fatima Shaban has won the Ontario provincial byelection in Scarborough Southwest, allowing the party to retain the east Toronto seat.
The vacancy arose after former Ontario NDP deputy leader Doly Begum resigned from the provincial legislature. Begum subsequently ran successfully for the federal Liberal Party in the same area.
The Progressive Conservatives retained York–Simcoe and Hamilton East–Stoney Creek in two other provincial byelections held on September 3. The three outcomes produced no significant change in the party balance at Queen’s Park.
Why it matters: Shaban’s victory preserves NDP representation in Scarborough Southwest and prevents the governing Progressive Conservatives or Ontario Liberals from gaining the Toronto seat.
